Cappadocia Balloons: Best Time, Cancellations & Watching
· Nomads Cave team

Balloons fly at sunrise, all year round, but only when the weather allows. Each morning the flights are approved or cancelled by the Turkish civil aviation authority based on wind and visibility. Spring and autumn usually bring the calmest mornings; winter has more cancellations but also snowy landscapes. You do not have to fly to enjoy it: on flight mornings the whole sky over Göreme fills with balloons.
When do the balloons fly?
- Time: Around sunrise. Pick-ups are usually before dawn, and the flight itself lasts about an hour.
- Season: All year. Flights depend on the conditions each morning, not the season.
- Best months: April–June and September–October generally have the most stable mornings and comfortable temperatures.
- Winter (December–February): More frequent cancellations due to wind and fog. On clear days, balloons over snowy valleys are unforgettable.
Why are flights cancelled?
Flights are approved each morning by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (SHGM), based on:
- wind speed at ground level and higher up,
- visibility (fog, low clouds),
- rain or snow.
The decision is made before sunrise. Your balloon company or hotel will let you know. If your flight is cancelled, companies usually offer another morning or a refund. Check the terms when you book.
How to check the flight status
- Ask your balloon company or your hotel the evening before and in the morning.
- Several websites publish the daily status based on official data. Treat them as a guide; the final word comes from your operator.
- Our tip: Book your flight for your first morning in Cappadocia. If it is cancelled, you still have a backup morning.
How much does a balloon flight cost?
Prices change with the season, the company, the basket size and the exchange rate, so we do not publish a fixed price. Standard flights share a basket with other passengers; private and small-basket flights cost more. Message us with your dates and we will give you current options.
Watching the balloons without flying
You do not need a ticket to see the show:
- From a rooftop in Göreme: At Nomads Cave, watching the balloons from our rooftop is included for guests. Come up around sunrise with a coffee.
- From a viewpoint: Hills around Göreme and Uçhisar give wide views. Arrive before sunrise.
- Photography: The best light is the first 30 minutes after sunrise. A light jacket helps; mornings are cool.
What to wear and bring
| Clothing | Layers. It is cold before sunrise even in summer, warmer once you are up. |
| Shoes | Closed, comfortable shoes. Baskets and landing fields can be dusty. |
| Hat | Recommended; the burner is warm above your head. |
| Phone and camera | A strap helps. |
