Cappadocia in Winter: Snow, Balloons and What to Pack

· Nomads Cave team

Balloons over Göreme seen from the Nomads Cave rooftop

Winter in Cappadocia is quiet, cold and, on the right days, magical. From December to February the valleys are calmer, snow sometimes covers the fairy chimneys, and on clear mornings the balloons rise over a white landscape. Flights are cancelled more often than in spring or autumn, so plan an extra night. Here is what to expect.

What is the weather like?

  • Days: Often cold, and below freezing at night. Sunny winter days can feel pleasant in the sun.
  • Snow: Common in winter, but not guaranteed on any given week.
  • Mornings: The coldest part of the day, just when the balloons fly.

Do balloons fly in winter?

Yes, on suitable mornings. Flights are approved each morning by the civil aviation authority, based on wind and visibility. Fog and wind cause more cancellations in winter. Stay at least three nights to have backup mornings. Book your flight for your first morning.

Even without flying, a snowy sunrise with balloons is one of the most photographed scenes in Türkiye. On flight mornings our guests watch from our rooftop; it is included for them.

What to pack

Coat A warm, windproof jacket. Mornings on the rooftop or in a balloon field are very cold.
Layers Thermal base layer, sweater, scarf, gloves and a hat.
Shoes Waterproof boots with grip. Valley paths can be icy or muddy.
Extras Sunglasses (snow glare), lip balm, a power bank (cold drains batteries).

What to do in winter

  • Valley walks on clear, dry days. Shorter routes, earlier finish: it gets dark early.
  • Göreme Open-Air Museum and an underground city on the Green Tour. Underground, the temperature stays fairly constant.
  • Hands-on workshops: pottery in Avanos, mosaic lamps, Turkish coffee. Ideal for cold afternoons.
  • A Turkish bath to warm up after a day outside.
  • Evenings: Lunch and dinner on Nomads Roof from 08:00 to 23:30; on cold nights, a warm room in the rock to come back to.

Christmas and New Year

The weeks around Christmas and New Year are the busiest of the winter. Book early, and plan an extra night for the balloons.
